The Concept Behind Sleepcurve
The Concept Behind Sleepcurve
Research carried out by leading Paediatric Cranial Osteopath Philip Owen, D.O., BSC. (Hons) paved the way forward for the development of the Sleepcurve range of mattresses from Tomy, which are now available alongside a range of fitted cotton covers. The mattresses were specifically designed to offer baby maximum comfort and support while they sleep. The unique moulded curve of the mattress supports a baby like no other mattress and offers a wide range of additional benefits for which include letting baby move freely, aiding babies' breathing, promoting correct posture, helping reduce reflux, keeping baby cooler and providing relief from pressure on the skull.

Why Use a Specialist Baby Mattress?
Plagiocephaly, or more commonly known as flat head syndrome (FHS), is caused when a baby spends a considerable amount of time with their head resting in the same position, like when asleep on a flat mattress. Babies are born with soft, pliable skulls, so when they rest in the same position like this on a regular basis, their head can develop a flat spot.

Paediatric Cranial Osteopath Philip Owen spent 20 years studying and treating tensions in babies' skull bones and his pioneering research has significantly advanced the understanding of babies' and children's sleep problems which can arise from tension in the bones of the skull.

Why Use Sleepcurve?
Not only can the patented Sleepcurve mattress address the issue of flat head syndrome, but it offers a range of other benefits which we have outlined here:
Increased Comfort - The ergonomic shape of the Sleepcurve mattress uses a patented technology that has been specially designed to copy the way a mother cradles her baby in the crook of her arm. The curve in the mattress provides a space for the bulge located on the back of a baby's head and at the same time relieves optimum pressure as the spine and head are both supported neutrally, allowing airways to be also be fully open.

Allows Baby's Head and Neck to Move Freely
The Sleepcurve mattresses have a unique shape, which allows a baby's head and neck to rotate freely, supporting the 'head neutral' position. This allows airways to remain open along with full head and neck movement. The 'neutral' spine position which results maximises airways keeping them open. It is a well known scientific fact amongst paediatricians that the optimum position for babies' airways should be the 'neutral' position, which is difficult to achieve on a flat mattress as there is no space to accommodate the bulge of the baby's head.

Promotes Correct Posture During Sleep
The ergonomically designed Sleepcurve mattress features a sculpted concave shape which helps prevent baby's shoulder blades from splaying apart. By supporting baby's natural curves in this way, optimum comfort for baby can be achieved during sleep.

Helps Reduce Reflux
As many has 50% of all babies will get some reflux during their first 3 months, and it can be very unsettling both for baby and parent. To help reduce this problem, a gentle slope has been incorporated into the Sleepcurve mattress from head to toe.

Keeps Baby Cooler While They Sleep
Most parents are aware of the importance of not letting a baby overheat, as this can be a factor in sudden infant death; also known as cot death. The Sleepcurve mattress has been designed with channels incorporated into the mattress to dissipate the warm air underneath baby, helping keep baby cooler. The curve also allows air to flow freely away from baby's head and not get trapped, helping reduce the chance that baby might overheat.

In summary:
  • Ergonomically shaped to fit and support baby
  • Provides a space for the bulge on the back of baby's head
  • Alleviates pressure areas on baby's head
  • An effective preventative for FHS
  • Supports self correction and proven to be an effective method for FHS treatment.
