Here you will find a huge variety of teats from leading brands including Philips Avent, Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature, Dr. Brown’s, MAM, Beaba and Yoomi. Please have a read of what each one offers to find the one most suitable for your baby but remember there is no wrong choice. All our baby brands are top quality and we recommend that if you do find it confusing then choose from the same brand as the bottle you have purchased as sometimes different brands may not be compatible.

A teat is the part that attaches to the top of a bottle for baby to drink through. Their purpose is to mimic as much as possible Mummy’s nipple to make the transition from breast to bottle as easy as possible and to deliver liquid to baby at the appropriate speed. Manufacturers invest hugely in researching and ensuring the best possible teat shape and design, size and type of hole and material used to make it.

For example teats made from latex were traditionally more commonly used in hospitals as they have a slightly coarser texture than silicone teats and therefore found to be a more realistic copy of Mummy. However, silicone teats sales are much higher for many reasons including their transparency and therefore visual appeal, they are more affordable, softer and overall more flexible (like the breast), have greater durability and there is also a much wider variety of styles available in them.

The size and type of hole often reflects the speed at which the liquid is filtered through for baby while it sucks. So as baby grows and strengthens these muscles you may want to purchase a medium teat (approximately 3 months onwards) or fast flow teat (approximately 6 months onwards). These flows are sometimes also referred to as levels (i.e. levels of flow) number 1 being the slowest. Most bottles come with a slow or level 1 teat to start baby off. If you find that your baby is spluttering milk out while sucking then you need to change to a slower flow rate and similarly if you find they are sucking hard but there is not proportionate milk flow then it’s time to move to a faster flow rate. Alternatively, you can buy variflow teats which allows baby to fully control the flow via their own sucking strength and eliminates the need to later buy different flow teats. Finally, there are some teats that are designed to allow thicker liquids through and tend to be called after the type of opening e.g. Y cut or X cut.

Consideration is also given by the manufacturer in the design of the teat tip, rim, width and depth of it. For example Philips Avent has launched the Natural Teat which has a petal design rim in order to try to assist natural latching on. MAM teats also have a grip feature with a patented silk surface and flatter wider teat end designed to entice an easier latch on (and stay on). Yoomi and Tommee Tippee teats have a wider circumference at the base of the teat of approx 4.5cm to 5cm whereas the Philips Avent, MAM and Dr. Brown’s teats are approximately 3cm to 3.5cm. The Yoomi teat has added uniqueness in that there is approximately 3.5cm between the bottom of the teat tip to the base of the teat (most teats offer 1cm to 2cm) making this feed much more like feeding directly from the breast due to the additional soft flexible contact. Tommee Tippee’s latest innovation has responded to the increase in cases of colic in babies and has developed a teat with an actual side vent within it allowing air to pass out of it rather than being swallowed by baby.

There are also teats available which are designed to be used in conjunction with non baby bottles such as normal water bottles. These come with a screw attached to the bottom of them so that they can easily replace the original bottle cap. We stock one from Beaba which also comes with it’s own teat cap and can be sterilised.

There may be special circumstances such as in the event of having a premature baby when it may not be possible to breast feed and in which case a premature baby bottle may be used and premature teats required. We stock a lovely reputable range from Dr. Brown’s which can be relied on in such cases.
